Flower Show, again

I got bored enough to try cleaning up some of these shots from the 2004 New England Flower Show, they aren't great but it's not like I'm entering any contests. In my defense, fotopages smooshes pixels and colors together with great abandon.

Goodbye UNH!

What, too bright for you Ada?? :)
Ada and I, with the camera sitting on my car
Kaori and I outside of Scott Hall
Another semester is over... and who knows when the next time that I set foot on Durham soil will be. I went up today to return my books and see Ada and Kaori before they left for Manhattan and Toyko, respectively.

Galway, Ireland; Winter 2003

Here are some photos from Galway, Ireland. Laura, Becky, Hayes, Katie and I had a girls weekend there during my semester in London last year. I figured I might as well start some sort of London Gallery, since it has been a year and all.

The weekend was great fun, not only did we get to see the beautiful west coast of Ireland, but we also got to STALK Andrew Keegan! You know, the arrogant guy from 10 Things I Hate About You and other movies? Yeah, it was great fun, we got in lots of trouble, saw lots of beautiful places, even got to know some drunken Irish boys. If you get a chance to go to Galway or the Arryan Islands, I definately recommend it, they're absolutely gorgeous places!

We flew in on Ryan Air, and Hayes is quite paranoid of flying so we got her drunk and medicated before the flight, and all was good! We stayed at a hostel right near Galway Bay for the first night, then another one a bit further away the second night. The first night we did have a very nice roommate though, a world traveller who told us a bit about his experiences and came out to a pub with us... and gave me some emergency allergy medicine when I started breaking out from the WOOL shirt I was wearing! (God did that itch like crazy!) We got some authentic fish and chips, and saw Andrew Keegan on two separate occasions, and followed him both times! The second time was at a pub and after he left one of us stole the glass he'd been drinking Guiness out of! There was some vague plan to sell it on eBay, but while we were drinking our waitress came over and took the glass away! Ah well. The second day we went off the the Arryan Islands which are just gorgeous and so of another era. You have to take a big ferry boat to get there (and someone was afraid of boats, so that was a bit of an experience but we made it again), and once there they have all these small buses lined up to take you on tours, so we selected one with our very nice guide, and two American sisters came with us, as well as three spanish people. We stopped at several places, once to photograph horses and cows and the rocks. It was an overcast day and overall quite wet but that only made the whole trip better. Once we got to the cliffs we had to hike up to the top, and the scenery was amazing. The cliffs are SO steep, its just a sheer drop all the way down to the ocean, and let me tell you it's FAR. Definately go if you ever get the chance! Also, there aren't too many locals who live on the island, everything is very small and quaint and wonderfully charming. There were several films shot on the island, I forget them now though. After the tour we hung out around the town, I bought and Irish whistle and we got lunch at the grocery store since we were too cheap to go for pubs! We made friends with some of the local dogs and cats and they shared our food. One even followed us all the way to the boat, but we had to leave him behind. 0) Back in Galway we did more shopping, went to more pubs and saw some great live celtic music and just had fun together.

Derbyshire, England (Spring 2003)

Chatsworth, the house itself
Anderson and I at the base of the stepped fountain
Frolicking in the freezing water
View all 5 photos...
Here are a few pictures from Derbyshire, where we went on our overnight weekend field trip for our English Country Homes and Palaces class with Annabel Ricketts. No one was looking forward to it, dreading it might be a better way to put it, but we actually had a pretty good time! Except for the lectures part.

We stopped first at Chatsworth, which is the home of the Duke and Duchess of... York? I don't know. But it is GORGEOUS. Not so much the house itself, but the gardens, and the landscaping is just sooooo beautiful. I won't go into it futher because we all had to write papers on the subject, but it is actually quite interesting. My favorite part was the stepped fountain. It was a warm day, comparatively, but Anderson and I went and frolicked in the water and it was damn COLD, I am talking icicles on our toes cold. And of course it is very slippery because it has a bit of algae build up, so as I was walking to get Anderson's camera I slipped and FELL IN! It is only about 2 inches deep, but that was two inches of *deep cold*. And, I managed to put a huge gash in my knee that caused me to limp for the next month. On the upside, I did get to visit the castle's infirmary and their private doctor was very, very nice.

The next castle we went to I forget the name, but it was really neat. It was a medieval castle, and a bit of a chop job so it had aspects of other periods in it, but it was great fun to explore. They also have this staircase where it is said if one walks down backwards they will dream of their future spouse that night. So of course we all had to do it... I dreamt of a handsome and very tall black guy that I've never seen, who knows! Also, when Jamie and I were watching the Princess Bride a few weeks later I started freaking out.. .because the courtyard in the movie was the same courtyard we had visited at this castle! It was awesome! Talk about tying in your education with real life and I have a postcard of it.

We stayed at a hostel up on the hill above a small little town, and it was actually a good time. We pretty much had all our friends (except Anderson, awww) in our room, and it was a very nice place. We ended up buying bottles of cheap wine from the hostel after dinner, and then taking the long walk down to the village to go to the pub where we'd meet our teacher for drinks. Well, along the way we met some local teenagers, and somehow the subject of pot came up, and one of the teenagers called her 'dealer' to get us pot. Oh god. Need I mention these kids are twelve? So we walk along further and the 'dealer' comes into sight. He's TEN, seriously TEN years old! And we just like book it and say bye to the kids. We hung out at the pub for a while, sneaking outside to drink from our wine bottles since we couldn't bring them in, and of course got pretty drunk this way. We left before closing, and took our long way back, but this time walked through some other streets, and past the 'haunted' graveyard. Guess who we saw there? The twelve year olds. So, very intoxicated me decides to let them have some of my wine, and one of the little wankers guzzled the whole rest of it! So we said goodbye to them and kept up the hill, where some of us felt it was a good idea to lie down in the middle of the road. Good times.

Hammond Castle

Arriving! John, Julie, Todd and Andrew

On Friday we went to Hammond Castle for their opening of the year - the King Arthur Faire! Unfortunately it was scheduled to RAIN all day so the whole thing was indoors. BUT! We thought good thoughts for the whole time and it stopped raining about halfway through, though all the festivities were still inside. We had the added bonus of getting there an hour late, and apparently all the crowds were thinning out once we were there for a short time, so we got a great deal! It was tons of fun and everyone had a good time exploring the castle and laughing at the actors, etc. Can't wait until the Robin Hood Faire this summer!

Just look at those golden edges...
Yummmm.
I needed to upload these pictures so I could link them to my livejournal post. This was my attempt at cooking British food. Popovers. I failed. Miserably. They weren't that bad though... I got the recipe out of the Pooh Cookbook so I could have something to eat with my honey. Next time my precious, next time...

As this is the first entry on this site, I will begin by introducing myself.

And since I can't build this forward just now, I will begin by building backwards.

If I am able to keep this up (unfortunately I am very lax when it comes to regularly updating anything), this gentlemen will feature heavily in my entries. His name is John and he makes an absolutely fascinating photography subject, perhaps because he is such a fascinating and unique individual.
